THEME DESCRIPTION

Organization, irrespective of its nature, size and type, can be viewed as a critical input and catalyst to the process of socio-economic evolution world-wide. This is also increasingly being realized that most of the emerging problems in the different societies are the result of the mismatch between ‘what we wish to deliver as organization’ versus ‘what is actually required by the society’. More than a century of research and continuous development in the subject-field of organizational theories and practices has contributed to significant changes in the way how the organizations are designed to perform towards the theoretical performance goals. The latest studies show that the highly inclined scientific orientation of the academia, economic-value dominance performance perception of the practitioners, and confined stakeholder’s vision, have been some of challenging factors that have led to the situation of ‘perceptual deadlock’ in envisioning the organizational desired performance. The continuously widening gap among the stakeholder’s perceptions regarding the role and performance of the organizations has triggered an emergence of new school of thoughts in the organizational studies, which appears to aim at the ‘holistic’ view of the organizations. Grounded in the classical open system approach of the organizations, the ‘holistic school’ focuses on the synchronization of individuals, organizations and society, leading to radical shift in the approach of establishing assumptions and developing criteria for sustainable organizational performances for producing ‘common-good’. However, the variations in the context related factors further leads to complexities and thus, pose challenge in moving towards a generalized approach to organization design and development. Therefore, analysis indicates that for a more generic and widely acceptable approach to develop truly ‘human oriented organizations,’ we need to align our values and assumptions to the universally acceptable values regarding purpose of social-economic institutions.

This special issue of the journal invites scholarly papers and articles on the different theme related issues. The proposed theme also aims to explore the related issues from both macro and micro perspective. The papers may be empirical or conceptual in nature. The papers supported by sound analysis and having originality in the approach would be preferred.
