Estonian Business School helps students choose the right specialties via design thinking; launches master’s programmes with a new concept, which are designed by the students based on their personal career needs, changes in society and lifelong learning principles and presents doctoral thesis defended at the EBS, revealing that Estonians fail to make full use of their knowledge and income in organising their personal finances to secure their future well-being.

Design thinking, which has spread as a trend in management in recent years, has reached the Estonian education system as well – EBS offers people who want to start studying for a degree a short course developed by the principle of design thinking, which will help them make informed choices about their careers and find the most suitable university and specialty. The doctoral thesis defended at the EBS on Thursday, 9 May, reveals that Estonians fail to make full use of their knowledge and income in organising their personal finances to secure their future well-being. Instead, they tend to focus on the present and make financial decisions that are often irrational. The financial literacy level of young people can be explained through both the number of books at home and their family’s wealth.

“We know that in order to secure future well-being, we have to organise our personal and family finances rationally in each stage of life: we need to make a budget and carefully consider both our short- and long-term wishes and needs and make smart decisions in order to fulfil them. In reality, we tend to favour current well-being over working towards future goals and live from payday to payday,” said Leonore Riitsalu, a newly qualified Doctor of the Estonian Business School, when summarising the key findings of her Doctoral thesis Books and Biases – the Explanation for Bounded Rationality in Managing Personal Finances. The Estonian Business School (EBS) launches master’s programmes with a new concept, which are designed by the students based on their personal career needs, changes in society and lifelong learning principles. According to the EBS chancellor Mart Habakuk, traditional business schools are rapidly losing market to e-studies and company colleges: “A few years back, the Estonian graduates interested in acquiring degrees in business or economy had to choose between the departments of economy of the 5-6 local universities or move abroad for studies, but today, in addition to all the previous choices, the students can choose from the e-curricula and the thousands of microdegrees and courses of hundreds of universities.
