The UI GreenMetric ranking examines universities' involvement in issues related to the natural environment (including infrastructure, transport, water and electricity consumption, waste management, and care for the climate and the environment). Also the richness of the educational offer and research activities undertaken in the area of sustainable development are an important issue for the organizer.
Gdańsk University of Technology was rated highest in the "education and research" category, where it received 90% of points. It is one of the leaders in educational and research activities related to sustainable development and environmental protection. Gdańsk Tech also achieved very good results in the "transport" category, where it received 89% of points. The university promotes ecological means of transport and the use of public transport. In the "waste" category, Gdańsk Tech obtained 88% of points, which shows that the university cares about proper waste management, segregation, recycling and composting.
Similarly to last year, Gdańsk University of Technology was followed by the University of Information Technology and Management in Rzeszów and the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań. Three universities from Europe are at the top of the UI GreenMetric 2023 ranking: Wageningen University & Research from the Netherlands, Nottingham Trent University from the UK and Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld from Germany.
The UI GreenMetric ranking has been organized since 2010 by the University of Indonesia. 1,183 universities from around the world took part in the 2023 edition. Compared to the 2022 edition, the number of participants increased by 133 universities. The number of universities from Poland also increased from 11 in 2022 to 15 in 2023. The UI GreenMetric ranking is one of the most important and prestigious university rankings in terms of sustainable development and environmental protection in the world.
