Will new pragmatism prevail?

More than 500 guests, including 50 prominent panelists, participated in an anniversary conference titled “In Quest of a Better World: Economics and Politics" honoring Professor Grzegorz W. Kołodko, a distinguished economist and a world expert on transition and development policy. The international conference took place in Warsaw on 28 and 29 January 2019.

Discussions during the first day focused on key global issues like globalization, economic successes of China, internal problems of Europe and Eurozone, defeat of neoliberal ideology in contemporary democratic societies and prospects of further development of global economy towards a sustainable model, according to the new pragmatism theory authored by Professor Kołodko. The list of panelists included many eminent international scholars, Nobel prize winners in economy, accomplished academics and practitioners who are committed to the development of emerging economies and to their efforts to offset chances with wealthier countries.

The second day’s debates were mostly concerned about Polish and Central European topics, however within the broader contexts of global challenges, including threat of new nationalism and customs wars or trade barriers.

In addition to valuable research insights and academic contributions, the conference was also an opportunity to express many anniversary wishes to Professor Grzegorz W. Kołodko, Poland's former deputy prime minister and minister of finance, and currently the Director of TIGER-Transformation, Integration and Globalization Economic Research Center at the Kozminski University.
