Doubtless, crime hinders the economy of a state and threatens the welfare of society. Crime steals the peace of mind of common citizens as well as their material goods. Therefore, proceeding from the undesirability of such a phenomenon as crime, scientists, and policymakers have been engaging in the research of such an occurrence. In order to answer the question of ‘How to stop crime?’ they first concentrate their attention on queries such as ‘Who is predisposed to crime’, ‘What are the mechanism of deviant criminal behaviour’, and ‘What precedes and causes crime?’.
The monography has its goal to shed some light on the latter enquire from a little-known, yet valid and authorized point of view. In particular, this monography develops an idea proposed by Donohue and Levitt, the economists who suggested that one of the viable reasons for the famous crime rate cutback in the US in the 1990s was the ‘Roe v Wade’ abortion legalization which came into effect a generation before the well-known crime decline.
This monography fosters that idea by introducing new geographical dimensions to the data used and methodological novelties to the econometrical model, i.e. the cornerstone of the research. Inter alia, the monography views the effect of legal abortions on crime from two angles: the so-called factual and legal measurements, of which factual part of research studies the relation between the factual legal abortions undergone and the number of intentional homicides committed in the UK between 1958 and 2015, while the other part of the research interrogates the impact of the legal status of abortions in various extents on the crime rate.
The monography may serve educational purposes for those who want to engage in social-economic studies and discover the unexpected relations that run the complicated world of society. It may be of particular interest for both academia-related readers such as economists, sociologists, and policymakers as well as enthusiasts including students of non-economics majors.
The relevance of this monography is specifically highlighted with obscureness and to some extent controversy that exists around the topic of abortions. This book’s secondary purpose is to open the curtain of prejudice to undesirable phenomena of crime and abortions as they need more attention from society in order to be solved.
