Ice Crossing across the Lake Balkhash «ULY BALQASH SHAQYRADY!»

The “Uly Balkhash Shakyrady” ice hike organized by AlmaU University has become a tradition for residents. The purpose of the crossing was to draw the attention of Kazakhstani society to the environmental problems of Balkhash and to support local tourism. The Balkhash Lake have traditionally occupied an important role as a historical, cultural and economic region.

Balkhash Lake, which has existed for more than 35,000 years, now needs attention as it is getting shallower and may repeat the fate of the Aral Sea. This is a unique lake where fresh water meets salt water. The mission of the project “Uly Balkhash Shakyrady!” is to attract public attention to the lake.

In the first Ice Crossing, there were 50 participants. In 2020 there were 100. And in the third Ice Crossing 120 people took part. From year to year the number of people indifferent to the fate of the lake grows.

Ice crossing program:

Hiking across the Balkhash lake(12 km, 24 km)
Thematic master classes, foresight talks
