The Hidden Champions concept, coined by Hermann Simon, has guided a long-term research effort led by Danica Purg and Denis Berberović, with the strong engagement of researchers from the CEEMAN network. Together, they have built a comprehensive, cross-country, and interdisciplinary research programme focused on highly specialised firms that achieve global leadership in focused niches and play a critical role in innovation, competitiveness, and export-led growth.
Developed by CEEMAN in collaboration with IEDC-Bled School of Management, and co-funded by the EBRD, the research has been evolving since its launch in 2011. To date, it has resulted in two published books, with a third volume currently in preparation.
The report Hidden Champions: Reshaping the EBRD Region brings together insights from 26 countries across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Building on previous research phases, the latest analysis highlights the resilience, adaptability, and international reach of Hidden Champions, while also identifying emerging talent and innovation-driven developments across sectors ranging from advanced manufacturing to digital services.
The London event created a valuable space for exchange among researchers, Hidden Champion company representatives, and project partners. The discussions underlined the practical relevance of the findings and reinforced the importance of these companies in supporting sustainable economic development across regions.
This initiative reflects a strong collective effort. We warmly thank all researchers and co-authors for their continued dedication, the speakers and moderators for fostering meaningful dialogue, and the many partners and experts who have supported the project’s growth and dissemination over the years. Our particular appreciation goes to the Hidden Champion companies themselves for their openness and trust in sharing data and experience, ensuring that the research remains firmly grounded in real business practice.
The collaborative spirit surrounding the event clearly demonstrated what can be achieved through shared purpose and long-term partnership.
