Digital Currency Research at SKOLKOVO

Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO has conducted a study of Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), which examines various aspects of CBDC in the context of the existing financial services and potential perspectives for its evolvement.

Applying a systematic analysis of information from academic and practice-oriented sources, as well as a set of strategic tools for analyzing initiatives, this study offers a CBDC's typology.

Moreover, the research suggests an approach to assessing the innovation potential of the CBDC and its use to analyze the ideas set out in the concept of a digital ruble presented by the Bank of Russia.

This study will be insightful to all those interested in the CBDC’s development prospects and the financial services market in general. In particular, central banks and other regulators in charge of issuing CBDC can use it to determine the design elements that best suit their goals and objectives, as well as to assess the potential consequences of CBDC-related decisions.

The existing financial services industry players can use:

  • this research findings to develop their own business growth strategies
  • in the context of the CBDC’s emergence, based on the types and goals
  • the Central Bank sets. In addition, there are new potential industry players.
