Narxoz University has become one of the first higher education institutes in the region to incorporate sustainability into all aspects of University life including curricula, strategic documents, research and campus operations.
Our upcoming campus redevelopment project will make Narxoz University one of the first complexes in Central Asia with a sustainable design as the central idea. In this context, the University will be transformed into a ‘living laboratory’ where students and faculty will engage in real life research and activities on campus and test sustainability concepts learned in the classroom. Moreover, students will be encouraged to engage in meaningful sustainability work on campus that puts those concepts into practice.

This year Narxoz University participated in the Global University Impact Rankings 2020 conducted by the Times Higher Education (THE) and is now entering the top 400 universities worldwide contributing to the UN SDGs:
- SDG 3: Promoting a healthy lifestyle: 401+
- SDG 4: Ensuring quality education: 401+
- SDG 5: Gender equality: 301+
- SDG 7: Providing access to modern, affordable and clean energy sources: 301+
- SDG 8: Promoting decent work and sustainable economic growth: 301+
- SDG 9: Building strong infrastructure, industrialization, and innovation: 401+
- SDG 16: Promoting peaceful societies, justice and accountability: 201+
- SDG 17: Strengthening global partnership for SD: 301+

Narxoz University is one of the two universities in Central Asia that were included in the rankings.
The University is also one of the first in the region to have a Strategy for Sustainable Development that sets forth a comprehensive vision of our local contribution to the implementation of the United Nations SDGs University wide. The Sustainable Narxoz-2030 Strategy was developed through a coordinated effort with the Sustainable Development Committee and the Sustainable Kazakhstan Research Institute (SKRI). The Strategy sets forth a vision of what we would envision for our community concentrated into four core areas: a) Campus culture; b) Education/research/curricula/transdisciplinary work on sustainability; c) Campus operations; d) Sustainable office.
The SKRI in collaboration with the Narxoz University management, staff and students aim to help contribute to this vision through activities at the University and in our larger community in Almaty.
