The “Basic Skills of a Mediator” program for Private Enforcement Officers consisted of nine modules, which together have become a solid foundation for their future professional activities. The modules covered topics such as: introduction to mediation, conflict psychology and visual psychodiagnostics, negotiation in mediation, the mediation process, models and approaches, emotional competence of a mediator, communication in mediation, and mediation in enforcement proceedings. The international component of the training program was both useful and engaging and included negotiation techniques delivered by renowned international expert Steve Alban Tineo. Participants also had the opportunity to learn about mediation practices in the Netherlands during sessions with Professor Jan van Zwieten.
During these sessions, Professor van Zwieten shared practical experience in applying mediation across various fields and highlighted the importance of mediation in Ukraine’s post-war recovery. He emphasized that successful mediation is based on understanding the participants’ psychology, active listening, neutrality, and empathy. He stressed that the mediator’s role is not to make decisions for the parties, but to help them independently reach a fair and realistic solution.
Despite today’s challenges, the group – which included private enforcement officers, lawyers, notaries, and psychologists – successfully completed all stages of training and passed the final assessment. Feedback confirms that mediation is an essential part of modern professional practice.
