The UEHS community is pleased to announce that its Professor Michał Wilczewski has been awarded a research grand from the National Science Centre under the Opus 25 scheme for a three-year research project at the University.
The research is entitled Language and communication in the experience of international students: Advancing intercultural communication and adaptation theory.
Prof. Wilczewski’s research interests focus on the intercultural experiences of different actors and, in particular, the role of language and culture in shaping these experiences. Recognising the need to develop a theory of intercultural communication and adaptation that could explain the contradictory findings of empirical studies, Prof. Wilczewski designed a longitudinal study involving students and staff at the UEHS. It is the ideal location for this project because of its highly international character and its location in a non-English-speaking country, which allows the research team led by Prof. Wilczewski to examine the role of proficiency in the local language – Polish – as a foreign language, and English as a lingua franca. Data will be collected through questionnaires, and group and individual interviews with members of the UEHS’ academic community – international and local students, and academic and administrative staff.
The results of this project will have a practical application in the development of the UEHS’ language policy, in order to improve the experience of its academic community. Using innovative methods and techniques from both quantitative and qualitative research, the results of the project will deepen the understanding of the complex relationships between language, communication and adaptation. The research conducted at the UEHS will shed new light on the adaptation process of international students in Poland, which is particularly important in the context of current global crises and the growing number of international students in Poland.
