Poznań University of Economics and Business (PUEB) response to the threat has been based on three principles: the safety of students and employees as the priority, quick and decisive action, open and clear communication. Below, mainly the organization of the work has been described. Though, at present, the main focus is on dealing with current challenges, lessons for the future “after the coronavirus” should be drawn.

Right from the start the threat of the novel coronavirus has been taken very seriously at the Poznań University of Economics and Business. PUEB response has been based on the following principles: the safety of the whole academic community as the main focus of all measures taken, quick and decisive action, and putting strong emphasis on open and clear communication.

Crucial decisions
have been taken quickly by the PUEB authorities. On March 10th classes at the PUEB were suspended. On March 12th home office was introduced for the absolute majority of administrative staff at the PUEB.

A special team has been created to resolve all incoming issues. The team, headed by the Head of Administration and Finance, consists of heads of units directly linked to the issues concerning the PUEB functioning during the pandemic. The head of the students’ parliament has been a member of the team, ensuring student participation in decision-taking and smooth communication from and to students.

For communication a special subsection called “Coronavirus” was created on the PUEB website (https://ue.poznan.pl/pl) where all decisions, pieces of advice and other materials have been placed.
A special message from the Rector, in Polish and in English  was filmed and reached a wide audience quickly. In addition, the PUEB taking care of all its stakeholders’ well-being placed posters both in Polish and in English providing basic information on the spread of coronavirus and the most fundamental principles of hygiene. The University provides disinfectant dispensers, gloves and protective masks to all its employees.

Transition into online education has been a challenge both for teachers and students. Strong support by the PUEB E-learning department has been offered. Introducing online decision-making for all University’s bodies (such as the Senate) has proved technically successful, but amendments to the PUEB Statute had to be introduced to make the transition possible.

Several support initiatives have been launched. PUEB employees may volunteer in helping PUEB former employees over 75 to deal with everyday life needs. Another initiative has linked PUEB employees or students with children learning at home who might need support with certain subjects. A team of PUEB scientists has developed an online platform to coordinate help for 140 hospitals all over the country.

While dealing with present challenges of the coronavirus, the PUEB has been trying to assess its impact and lessons for the future. A special team has been created to analyze financial implications and PUEB response to them. Online meetings and decision-making will certainly be used more often after the pandemic. The University will also improve its technology-enhanced learning to meet the demands of the new virtual environment.

All things considered, PUEB has proved to respond well to the challenges of the pandemic.
