Message from Dean

Across the globe, we are witnessing technological breakthroughs that promise transformative progress. Yet, these advancements also bring new anxieties, divisions, and challenges. While some nation—and indeed, certain individuals—grow richer, more powerful, and more technologically advanced, millions continue to face economic insecurity, social exclusion, and existential crises. Innovation has been a key driver of prosperity and economic growth in many parts of the world, fueling industrial revolutions, expanding global markets, and contributing to the rise of wealthy nations.

However, as we embrace innovation as a cornerstone of development, we must also confront its darker side. We have seen how innovation—rather than serving the common good—has been co-opted to serve the interests of the few.

In this context we must explore new and alternative models of innovation—ones that are not drive solely by the profit motives of wealthy nations and corporations. We need models that are not only pro-profit but also pro-people and pro-planet; models that prioritize equity, inclusivity, and sustainability. As we look to the future, we must explore how to better balance the incentives for innovation with the needs of people—both in rich and poor nations.
