2015 CEEMAN Champions and CEEMAN Case Writing Competition Winners receive their awards in Almaty

The winners of the 2015 Case Writing Competition and the 2015 CEEMAN Champions joined the 23rd CEEMAN Annual Conference that took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan from 23-26 September, to receive their awards at the award ceremony on 25 September.

CEEMAN has also this year awarded the outstanding individuals of CEEMAN member institutions with the CEEMAN Champion Awards. In recognition of their achievements, the winners received the Award Cup at the 23rd CEEMAN Annual Conference award ceremony in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 25 September.

The CEEMAN Award jury consisted of Jim Ellert, CEEMAN board member, IMTA academic director and IQA director; Arshad Ahmad, member of the IMTA faculty team and associate vice president, Teaching & Learning of McMaster University, Canada, and Olga Veligurska, CEEMAN director. Out of the eight nominations from six institutions in six countries (Germany, Kazakhstan, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey), the jury chose the winners in accordance with the competition criteria in three categories:

The CEEMAN Teaching Award was won by Can Akkan, Sabanci School of Management, for his curriculum innovation of using technology for analysis and decision making, a methodology that has been transferred successfully to other teachers and courses at Sabanci University (interdisciplinary impact).

In the category of Research the jury awarded Dorota Dobija, Kozminski University, Poland for her research portfolio of publications that has depth and focus; for her important contribution in the area of corporate governance, which has been recognized and published in top international academic journals.


Responsible Management Education category was won by Marcela Ramirez-Pasillas, Jönköping International Business School (JIBS), Sweden for her role in introducing sustainability and principles for responsible management education in a business school and embedding PRME principles into curriculum development.

This year no award was given in the category of institutional management.

Participating at the 23rd CEEMAN Annual Conference in Almaty were also the representatives of the top three case studies of the 21st CEEMAN Case Writing Competition. The annual CEEMAN Case Writing Competition has been organized in partnership with Emerald Group Publishing since 2007 and received a record number of submissions this year (76 case study submissions).

Jenson Chong-Leng Goh from SIM University, Singapore, accepted the award for the third place in the competition, also on behalf of his co-authors, Adrian Saville and Caren Scheepers from GIBS, University of Pretoria, South Africa.

The award for the second place of the competition was delivered to Olga Ivanova from ICN Business School in France, for the case study written together with Kim Poldner, Wageningen University, the Netherlands; and Oana Branzei, Ivey Business School, Canada.

Returpack: The integrator of the beverage can recycling process is the winning case study of the 2015 CEEMAN Case Study Competition written Gyorgy Drotos and Peter Moricz from Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary. Dr. Peter Moricz accepted the award for the first place at the conference award ceremony and commented: “We feel very much honored that the prestigious evaluation committee have selected our case study as the winner! This competition is a great motivation for faculty members committed to curriculum development and the case study method. This is one of the several ways how both CEEMAN and Emerald are consistently supporting the development of the management education. We say thanks to Returpack’s CEO Laszlo Duma for providing us with the amazing story of his company and also to our colleagues at the Faculty of Business Administration of Corvinus University since their dedication to high quality research and teaching is our greatest inspiration.
